ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Groups & Fixture
In September and October 2024, Bangladesh will be the host of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Ten teams will compete fiercely for the top prize. Australia, hoping to make history with a fourth straight win, came out on top in the last tournament. They beat South Africa, who were the hosts, in Cape Town.
The teams taking part include Bangladesh, who qualify automatically as hosts, and the top six from the previous World Cup: Australia, South Africa, England, India, New Zealand, and West Indies. Pakistan earned the eighth spot thanks to their ICC Women’s T20 rankings as of February 27, 2023.
The final two spots will be decided at the World Cup Qualifier event in early 2024. In the mix are Ireland and Sri Lanka, both formidable teams from the 2023 World Cup, along with Thailand, keen to regain their place after being part of the 2020 tournament.
This upcoming tournament is the ninth Women’s T20 World Cup. Australia has been the strongest team, winning the title six times, which is a record. England and West Indies are the only other champions, winning in 2009 and 2016, respectively.
Notably, this T20 World Cup holds significance as the last edition before cricket’s debut at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
The Journey to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
The journey to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is underway. Just like in 2023, ten teams will be in the 2024 tournament. Eight teams have already made it in without any extra effort. Pakistan ranked next in T20, and Bangladesh, as the host, also got automatic spots.
The last two places in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be decided in a global qualifier in 2024. To be part of this qualifier, teams need to do well in their regions.
Regional Qualifiers
In 2023, the ICC set up a qualification process involving five regional tournaments: Americas, East Asia Pacific, Asia, Europe, and Africa. These tournaments were open to cricket-playing countries that are associate members of the ICC.
